What Makes a Good Spy Movie?

Recently, I saw the movie The 355, I know you’re thinking “the what?”, I’ll explain later. Back to the movie, it really made me think about what makes a good spy movie. It really takes a bad spy movie to remind you how good “the greats” really are. So The 355 is a female spy movie essential about five women from different CIA, FBI, MI6, etc. types of federal agencies that come together to face a common enemy instead of competing against each other to get this drive that can make things blow up with one click. The movie was a bad spy movie but an okay movie, ( in general ). The thing about it was that it just wasn’t very special. It wasn’t thrilling, intriguing, or scary. There were no prominent actors, cameos, writers, producers, directors, etc. It had no cool special effects or funny lines. It had great potential and some of the scenes could have been really interesting, all I’m saying is that they could have toyed with it more. For example, there is this one scene where the “bad guys” bust into the women’s safe house with video of all the women’s loved ones held captive. After like 30 seconds of 👨: “I’m gonna kill your loved ones if you don’t give me the flash drive” & 👩‍🦱: “No please, they’re all I have” *boo-hoo* They just shoot the loved ones, the women break down in tears, the “bad guys” take one of the agents hostage and they leave. The other four women just pretend like nothing happened and continue on with the movie. In the end, there is a big betrayal, ya-da, ya-da. They briefly explain what The 355 is and basically, The 355 was a female spy who was “one of the greats” in history but nobody knew her name so they just call her “The 355” this doesn’t correlate to the movie at all because everybody knows the spy’s names. I guess they’re just not being recognized for what they did? This movie ( which got a 25% on rotten tomatoes and a 4.7/10 on IMDB ) really pointed out what makes a good spy movie. Like for instance, a good plot. Something thrilling that leaves you scratching your forehead and on the edge of your seat. Or good special effects, and acting to go with it. Something original that has that special touch to make it really stand out. This movie was also just not very well marketed, like I said in the beginning, you probably had never heard of this movie like most of my peers. Well now you have heard of it, so you don’t need to waste your time seeing it.
