T.S. Midnights Review

On October 21st, 2022 Taylor Swift released her record-breaking 10th studio album, titled Midnights. Later that evening she then released an extended version titled Midnights: 3am Version with 6 more songs. Swifties and others alike huddled around their phones to listen to this icon’s latest work. Spotify recently reported that Midnights broke the record for the most streamed album in a day on Spotify. Midnights has been praised and critiqued all over the world, and here’s my take on it.

Please note before reading:

I rated the songs after my first time hearing them and those are just my first-time ratings so they will change as I “get to know” the songs better. Also, I feel like all these songs will grow on me. I didn’t do notes on all of the songs because I didn’t have thoughts on all of them. You may notice that my “new” ratings don’t match the songs in the order I ranked them. That’s because I view the ranking and the rating differently the rating is how good I think a song is, taking into consideration the lyrics and the music. The ranking is my favorite to my least favorite. Simply, my favorite song may not have as strong lyrics as another song so it may get a lower rating.

Overall:

It’s very Taylor-y and it’s very mystical. It’s exactly what I expected it to be. Some songs feel very Lover era. But, it’s super angsty and I love it. It’s an angsty mystical mix of Reputation & Lover and a bit of soothing folklore. I don’t really get the idea of the13 sleepless nights because I can’t quite figure out the sleepless nights in her songs. In a home video about Anti-Hero, Taylor Swift said that it was all about the things that she hates about herself. I can definitely see that in the song I just don’t get how that works into a sleepless night. The lyrics of every song are so magical and perfect. I feel like she did some experimenting with autotune, different sounds, noises and effects and most of it worked out to produce a cool, versatile album. I was worried that I wouldn’t like it for one reason or another but I’m 100% satisfied with this album. It did not disappoint! Part of me was hoping for something a tab it different because all her albums are in different ways. But this album is a mush of all of her albums which itself is different. There are so many cute little details in the music and music/lyric videos that shows how much work she put into it. What’s funny is the next song that played on my Spotify after the album was boyfriend by Dove Cameron and I thought that kind of fit it well. They aren’t too similar but I think most who like that song will like this album. I love this album, each song has its own little tidbits, and don’t dislike any of the songs. All these songs are so fun to sing along to and dance to, the lyrics are so meaningful. In reading and listening to other people’s thoughts I think it’s interesting the reception this album is getting. Some people are absolutely obsessed (like me!) and some people think it’s her worst studio album yet. But I really think you can’t please everyone and overall I think Taylor did a great job.

ANTI-HERO MUSIC VIDEO

I loved this music video it’s so chaotic and awesome and fits the song so well. I love the bit about the cat sanctuary. It’s super fun a whimsical and it’s perfect.

Thanks for reading this far! I hope you enjoyed my take on Taylor’s new piece.
