The Song Of Achilles by Madeline Miller : A Review.

If you are a romance, mythology, or “booktok” fan then you have definitely heard of this book. The Song of Achilles is taking the world by storm. It is 43-year-old Madeline Miller’s debut novel and has peaked at #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List. This book has sparked popularity across social media and major book stores like Powell’s books ( Located in Portland, OR ) and Barnes and Noble ( located throughout the U.S. ) because of its gut-wrenching romance and modern take on the tale of the greeks at Troy. “One of the best novelistic adaptations of Homer in recent memory,” says Wall Street Journal. “Fast, True, and incredibly rewarding…..A remarkable achievement,” says USA Today. While most love this fast-paced romance others are more skeptical about the way that Miller framed the novel. Daniel Mendelsohn a teacher at Bard College, frequent columnist at The New York Times, and an author himself compares the narration of one of the main characters, Petrocolus, to “sound irritatingly as if they were lifted from SparkNotes.” Having recently taken a dive into the world of Mythology I found this book quite enjoyable. This fast-paced masterpiece certainly deserves its spot at #1. What struck me about this novel is the idea of seeing history and legend unfold from the eye of a side character not to mention one that is deeply invested in the story is so effective at accurate narration. Maybe even more so than the main character would. This book has all the feels and the next time you go to a bookstore, definitely pick this one up.
